The basic triangle

Every straight stair reduces to a right triangle. The vertical leg is the total rise (floor to floor), the horizontal leg is the total run, and the hypotenuse is your stringer.

  • Rise: height of one step, total rise ÷ riser count
  • Run: depth of one step, where your foot lands
  • Angle: arctan(rise ÷ run), comfortable at 30-40°

Headroom and the floor opening

Where a stair passes through the floor above, the IRC requires 6′8″ of headroom measured plumb from the tread nosing. The advanced mode checks your floor opening length and floor thickness against this limit.

Standard mount vs flush mount stair construction methods comparison

Standard vs flush mount

On a standard mount the last riser steps up onto the upper floor, so you get one more riser than treads. On a flush mount the top tread finishes level with the upper floor. Riser and tread counts are equal, and every riser gets slightly taller for the same total rise.

Riser
The vertical face of a step. IRC maximum height: 7.75″ (196 mm).
Tread
The horizontal surface you step on. IRC minimum depth: 10″ (254 mm).
Stringer
The sawtooth structural board that carries treads and risers, usually cut from 2×12 stock.
Nosing
The tread edge overhanging the riser below: ¾″-1¼″ where treads are under 11″.
Total rise
Finished-floor to finished-floor vertical distance. The single most important measurement.
Total run
Horizontal distance the stair occupies, from first riser to last.
Headroom
Vertical clearance above the nosing line. IRC minimum: 6′8″ (2032 mm).
Handrail
Required on flights of 4+ risers, mounted 34″-38″ above the nosings.

Yes. How many feet is 4 steps (stairs)?

Four risers at the common 7.5-inch step height total 30 inches — that is 2.5 feet (2 ft 6 in). At the 7.75-inch code maximum, four steps reach about 31 inches (2 ft 7 in). The exact height depends on your riser height, so enter your floor-to-floor rise above for the precise figure.

What are standard stair dimensions in metric (mm / cm)?

Riser about 180–190 mm (196 mm max), tread depth at least 254 mm (25.4 cm), width at least 914 mm, and headroom at least 2032 mm. Switch any input to cm or m to read every result — riser, tread, stringer and angle — in metric.

What is the rise and run of stairs?

Rise is the vertical height of one step; run is its horizontal depth. The total rise and total run form the right triangle that sets stringer length and stair angle. A typical residential step is a 7.5-inch rise with a 10-inch run.

How do I calculate stair treads?

Tread depth (the run) must be at least 10 inches (254 mm) under the IRC. The number of treads is one less than the number of risers on a standard mount, and equal to it on a flush mount. Enter your run and total rise above to get both counts.

What is the ideal staircase angle (in degrees)?

Between 30° and 40°, with 30-35° the most comfortable. The IRC's limits (7.75″ max riser over a 10″ min tread) put the steepest code-compliant residential stair at about 37.8°. Steeper feels like a ladder; shallower than 30° wastes floor space. The calculator reports your exact angle and flags it against this range.

How do you calculate the number of steps from floor-to-floor height?

Divide the total rise (floor-to-floor height) by a target riser of about 7.5″ and round to a whole number, then recompute the true riser as rise ÷ count so all steps match. A 108″ rise → 108 ÷ 7.5 = 14.4 → 14 risers of 7.71″ and 13 treads on a standard mount. Flush mounts have equal riser and tread counts. Full guide: calculating risers and step count →

What is the 2R + T rule?

Blondel's comfort formula: twice the riser plus the tread should total 24-26″. It approximates a natural stride. Taller steps must be shallower to keep walking rhythm. 2(7.5) + 10 = 25″ is ideal. Configurations outside the range feel awkward even when they pass code, so the calculator checks it live.

How is stringer length calculated?

With the Pythagorean theorem: √(total rise² + total run²). A 108″ rise with a 130″ run needs √(11664 + 16900) ≈ 169″ of stringer. Buy your 2×12 longer than that to allow for the plumb and level end cuts.

What are the basic building code requirements for stairs?

IRC R311.7: risers ≤ 7.75″, treads ≥ 10″, width ≥ 36″, headroom ≥ 6′8″, handrail on 4+ risers at 34-38″, and no more than ⅜″ variation between the biggest and smallest riser in a flight. Local codes can be stricter (some use a 7″/11″ rule) so confirm with your building department.

How do I choose appropriate tread materials?

Judge on five criteria: slip resistance first (oak, maple, textured stone; avoid polished tile), durability second (solid wood ≥ 1″ or stone), then maintenance, looks, and cost. Whatever you pick, enter the finished tread thickness in Advanced mode; the calculator shows the first riser cut (stringer drop) that keeps every finished rise equal.

What is the difference between "Use of Run" and "Use Total Run"?

Pick by what you know. Know each tread's depth (matching an existing stair, pre-cut treads)? Use of Run. Know the total horizontal space the stair must fit (landing at a doorway)? Use Total Run. The calculator divides the space into equal treads. Both return the same full set of results.
